Scouting for the right school no childs play
It is perhaps the most difficult endeavour of their lives. Tense moments that they may not even have faced in their workplaces. Parents these days are on mission admission, all faculties alert, to select the best schools for their bundles of joy.
Ready to invest their savings for a better tomorrow of their children.
While selecting the school, there’s also the ‘prestige’ to preserve.
Meet Venkatesh, a civil engineer and his wife Swaroopa, residents of Nagarbhavi. Admitting their son to school is the only issue on their minds these days.
Venkatesh who runs his own firm, says that he wouldn’ t mind missing a visit to construction sites or losing a client for his son’s sake.
Swaroopa says they leave home every day at 9 am and visit at least three schools a day.
“I finish household work fast. I won’t mind putting in that extra bit of work for my son,” she says. First, they went to an ICSE school which started last year in Sunkadakatte.
“They first called us for an interview.
Most of their questions were rather aimed at knowing our financial status than the child’s IQ,” she says.
The fee is too expensive - Rs 60,000 as school ‘developmental fee,’ and Rs 2,000 as monthly fee, excluding van fee - she adds. “So, we dropped that school from our list,” they said.
They also went to a CBSE school in Rajarajeshwarinagar, which belongs to an MLA. “By the time we went, it was too late. The authorities said if we get a recommendation letter from the MLA, we may get a seat.
How can ordinary people like us get such recommendation letters.” In Montessories like Euro Kids & Kidzee, it’s not that difficult to get a seat. “These schools offer only kindergarten education. So, we are looking for a school where our son can study up to standard 10,” she adds.
Ravi and Soumya (name changed) face a different predicament. Their son is in second standard in a private school. The parents aren’t happy with the school.
